• Nomad lifestyle and handicraft tradition

Nomadic society is based on five species of livestock: horses, camels, cattle or yaks, sheep and goats. So they are called "Five-animal people”. The country is also known as the land of horse. Horse is the pride of Mongolia and any nomad can ride. Yaks and cows bring meat, leather and milk, which is used for making a variety of diary products such as yoghurt, cheese and aaruul (dried cheese) that constitute the main diet of nomads during the summer months. Sheep is used for meat and milk, the basic food of nomadic lifestyle, skins and wool for housing, felt, clothes and carpet. Goats are popular for cashmere wool. Mongolia is one of the largest producers and exporters of the finest quality cashmere in the world. Two-humped Bactrian camels are used in Gobi for long-distance transport and are valuable for their adaptability and their wool. It’s the people, not climate or landscape what make Mongolia unique!
