• Mongolian Buddhism and Monasteries

The Mongols had limited contact with organized religion before the great empire of the 13th century. It is in the time of the Great Khans, especially when Chinggis Khaan conquers Tibet that the Tibetan form of Buddhism gains influence in Mongolia. At the end of 16th century Altan Khan, a descendant of Chinggis Khaan met the Tibetan leader Sonam Gyatso. This meeting means a revival of Buddhism in Mongolia. From that period Buddhism becomes the predominant religion in the Mongolian territories.
